Rev. Oliver “Buzz” Thomas – Large Families = Sinful?

Yet again, another interesting topic stirred up on the Michael Medved Show.  As a guest, Oliver Thomas was on the show to discuss his latest book entitled: 10 Things Your Minister Wants to Tell You: (But Can’t, Because He Needs the Job).  For the 30 minute segment I listened in on, the topic of discussion centered around Thomas’ view that the earth is now overpopulated.

Why is that a significant topic of discussion?  On the air, Thomas recognized the command in Genesis 1 saying to “be fruitful and multiply.”  Emphasized even greater was the command in Genesis 2 that God put man in the garden to “take care of it.”  He believes that the earth is now overpopulated, and if we are to take care of the earth, then “we must stop having so many children.”  In a recent article in USA Today by Thomas entitled “Might our religion be killing us?”, he states:

“Clergy should consider voicing the difficult truth that having more than two children during such a time is selfish. Dare we say sinful? The average American might not listen to his elected representatives, but he darn sure listens to his pastor. Every week. This will be a hard message for pastors to preach and parishioners to hear, but without it we court disaster.”

This was backed up by what he was talking with Medved about on the air.  He said outright that it was “selfish” and “wrong” to have many children, and that this should be taught and preached by churches and religious leaders.

There are many disturbing problems I see with his viewpoint, but the foremost is advocating churches and religious leaders to preach this.  We, as Christians, should encourage large families, and raise up as many God-honoring children as we can.  Thomas missed the mark big time.

  1. I totally agree! What a fish!

  2. Here, Here. I agree with Phil. Fishy fish fish.

There is not energy crisis. There is no fuel crisis. All the problems right now with energy and fuel are propogated by the latest religion of Nature/Environment worship. We’re becoming more and more pagan. Soon, we’ll see people dying for lack of food and, in essence, those people are sacrificial deaths at the alter of Mother Nature.
