Tornado Rips Through Hugo, MN

We are fine.  Only some siding damage to our complex from the hail.

This afternoon, two major storm fronts came right through Hugo today.  We’ve have my wife’s parents up for a visit, so they were able to witness this with us.  The first storm front had a tornado slice through not even a mile from our townhome.  We drove out to see the damage as soon as the worst passed.  There were homes completely wiped out, many that were heavily damaged.

Not more than 10 minutes after we left, another green wall cloud was heading right for us.  There was a family standing outside their home (their neighbor’s house was quite damaged).  We asked them if they saw the tornado, and they had.  They said there was another tornado heading our way right across 35E in Lino Lakes.  We booked it back to our place – it looked bad.

After we got back, the rain started coming down.  We were anxiously scanning the sky.  We don’t have television here, so we were at the mercy of our eyes, and the internet.  The hail started, and grew.  I probably saw hail that was up to an inch and a half in diameter.  Then it picked up, and the wind went crazy.  We couldn’t see anything outside but wind and the white of hail.  We were scared.

Fortunately, it passed.  We got some good pictures of the hail and the wind.  We also drove through some of the damage again after the second storm hit and got some pictures.  I will post more later.  Just wanted to give a quick update.

  1. Can you tell me if the tornado touched down anywhere near the Blacksmith or Geneva Ave. N? My brother lives in Hugo and I have not been able to reach him. Thanks.
